BAHREC | Message from Leadership

Brad Margolis, President, 2026-2027

Hello BAHREC Members,

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the SHRM California Quarterly Board of Directors meeting in San Mateo. Sonja Fuentes Tappan, President of the San Mateo City Chamber, delivered an inspiring keynote, and it was energizing to hear how other SHRM chapters across the state are creating value for their members. What struck me most was a simple reminder: community doesn't happen automatically. It happens because people choose to show up, contribute, and invest in one another.

That reminder feels especially relevant for us. BAHREC exists to create space for senior HR leaders to share ideas, work through challenges, and learn alongside peers who understand this work. But the organization only comes to life through what each of you brings to it. The insight you offer in a conversation, the connection you make with a colleague who's facing something you've already navigated, the willingness to say what's actually happening in your organization rather than the polished version. That's what makes this community valuable.

Why this matters right now. Many of us are operating in environments that demand a lot and offer little certainty. Whether it's managing through funding pressures, rethinking workforce strategy as AI reshapes roles, or supporting leaders who are stretched thin, these are not challenges with clean playbooks. In small and mid-sized organizations especially, the CHRO often carries strategic, operational, and human dimensions simultaneously, sometimes without a deep bench to lean on. Peer networks aren't a nice-to-have in that context. They're a practical resource.

Come be part of it. I'm looking forward to connecting with many of you at our Summer Social on August 19 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Steins Beer Garden in Mountain View. It's an informal evening, and exactly the kind of setting where the best conversations tend to happen. If you've been meaning to get more involved with BAHREC, this is an easy place to start. Registration is open here.

We're actively building this community, and we're counting on each of you to help bring it to life.

Warm regards,

Brad Margolis

President, BAHREC

Inclusive Leadership

A message from BAHREC VP of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Porsche C. Williams:

One of DEIB’s defining characteristics is its complexity. It has been cast as an abstruse buzzword, a mandatory line item, a stakeholder demand, and a multifaceted cultural conundrum. Sometimes all at once. For years, organizations were urged to align their practices with their stated intentions with little guidance on what that really means. Recent political and cultural shifts have since turned the pressure into open scrutiny of whether the work delivers at all. Yet the skepticism runs against the evidence. Data continues to confirm what practitioners and advocates have long argued: inclusion is a performance condition and people who feel safe to contribute innovate more readily, stay longer, and adapt faster. The question facing us is how to lead in this next phase. Beneath the noise, the answer is taking shape. DEIB is enduring by shedding surface-level compliance for something more durable and built around how employees actually experience their work.

SHRM has been reading the research, consulting with experts, and listening to leaders to build a scalable framework designed to leave employees feeling heard, valued, and able to contribute at their highest level. Through its Center for Inclusion & Diversity (CID), SHRM helping leaders meet legal scrutiny, regulatory expectations, and rising workforce complexity with research-backed tools. The Diversity, Civility, Inclusion framework imagines DEIB as a working equation: Diversity  + Civility = Inclusion. Or in operational terms, Input + Process = Outcome. Diversity is the input: the range of identities, perspectives, experiences, and ways of thinking people bring to the workplace. Civility is the process: the standard for which we consistently engage across those differences, with respect, curiosity, honesty, and accountability. Inclusion is the outcome: the feeling of being genuinely heard, valued, and able to contribute their best. This framework highlights that inclusion is something an organization produces through intentional practice, action, and continuous behavior. For more information, please visit: www.shrm.org

SHRM’s model provides us with a solid foundation to stand on, and what we share from our own leadership experiences can help others learn and grow. How we advocate for public policy and civil rights that shape the safety and protections of our people. How we navigate the rise of AI without inheriting its unintended biases and blind spots. How we develop future-ready leaders. How we bridge across differences. From boardroom strategy to micro-moments that people feel. Please join us as we ask the hard questions and advance the promise of DEIB together.

Member Spotlight

Ami Filipas, Director, Human Resources at Harvest Properties

What drew me to BAHREC is the opportunity to connect and collaborate with fellow HR leaders in the Bay Area. California HR can be incredibly nuanced, so having a space to share ideas, compare approaches, and learn from others navigating similar challenges is incredibly valuable. As a lifelong learner, I’m always looking for opportunities to grow and gain new perspectives, and BAHREC’s education sessions are a great way to stay current on trends and developments in our field.
